  • Many of the welfare recommendations on space allowances for animals are empirical in nature. This study compared normal and abnormal behaviours of birds with different spacial allowances, and identified a need to revise the current minimal standards.

Deception by Flexible Alarm Mimicry in an African Bird

  • Mimicry in the capacity of a bird to copy the sounds and calls of other organisms that it cohabits with - much like a parrot learning to talk. 
  • This observational study identified that the Fork-tailed drongo copies alarm calls from its cohabiting species and uses them to cause those cohabitants to flee and allowing the drongo to still food.
